Issue
When attempting to install an extension, the Extension Manager reports that a specific minimum product is required to install an extension. For example:

This extension requires the following products: Dreamweaver (4 or higher)

However, the minimum product or a more recent version of that software is already installed on your system.

Note: Extension Manager 1.5 is not compatible with Dreamweaver 3 or Dreamweaver UltraDev 1. If using one of these products, please see Extension Manager 1.5 does not work with Dreamweaver 3 or Dreamweaver UltraDev 1 (TechNote 16415) for more information as well as a link to download a compatible version of the Extension Manager.

Reason
Certain Windows installations of Extension Manager 1.5 are not able to identify installed compatible products if the products are not currently running.

Solution
Below are three possible solutions. The first solution should work for most users, but the other solutions are provided as additional information.

Run the Extension Manager from within the application
This is the simplest solution, and it should work in most cases. The steps given below are assuming Dreamweaver 4, but comparable steps would work for any compliant application.

1 Download the extension package from the Exchange and save to your hard drive.
2 Launch the application the extension is for. In this example, the application is Dreamweaver 4.
3 Launch the Extension Manager from within the application. For Dreamweaver 4, this is done by choosing Commands > Manage Extensions. The Extension Manager dialog box should appear with the application listed in the Product pop-up menu.
4 With the appropriate product (Dreamweaver 4) listed, choose File > Install Extension. Browse to where you saved the extension package in step 1, select it and choose Install.
5 Continue the installation process. If the extension requires that you restart the application, do so.

Reinstall Extension Manager-compatible products
The solution listed above should work, but is not a long-term solution. Since the issue seems to be that the Extension Manager is not able to find the application(s), reinstalling the compatible applications will rewrite the registry keys read by the Extension Manager.

1 Close all programs that are compatible with Extension Manager 1.5 (Dreamweaver 4 and above, Flash 5 and above, Fireworks MX).
2 Launch the Extension Manager from the start menu (Start > Programs > Macromedia > Extension Manager) and notice programs that fail to appear in the drop-down menu. These are the programs that you will need to uninstall and re-install. Close the Extension Manager
3 Uninstall and reinstall each Macromedia Extension Manager-compatible program that did not appear in the Extension Manager pop-up menu. For step-by-step reinstallation instructions, please see General Windows troubleshooting (TechNote 15481).
4 Uninstall and reinstall the latest version of the Extension Manager from the Macromedia Exchange.

Editing the Windows Registry to restore deleted/corrupted key
If users wish to fix the issue permanently without reinstalling the applications, editing the registry keys for the pertinent applications would also resolve the issue. The instructions below are provided for informational purposes only, and Macromedia cannot be held responsible for problems resulting from registry modifications.

Note: The Windows registry is a database used to store settings and options for 32 bit versions of Windows (95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP). Since the registry contains critical system information, back up your registry and exercise extreme caution when making any changes or updates. As stated above, users pursue this solution at their own risk.

1 Close all applications that are compatible with Extension Manager 1.5 (Dreamweaver 4 and above, Flash 5 and above, Fireworks MX).
2 Launch the Extension Manager from the start menu (Start > Programs > Macromedia > Extension Manager) and notice programs that fail to appear in the drop-down menu. These are the programs that will need registry keys edited. Close the Extension Manager
3 Launch the Windows Registry editor by choosing Start > Run, enter regedit in the Open field, and click OK.
4

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the appropriate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key. All keys are in the following format:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Macromedia\Product Name\Version\Registration

So the registry key for Dreamweaver MX (version 6) is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Macromedia\Dreamweaver\6\Registration

5a

Double click on the Location string in the pane on the right and make sure the Value Data box points to the install location of the application's executable file. Make changes if needed, and click OK to apply the changes.

For Dreamweaver MX, the default install location is C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Dreamweaver.exe

5b If the Location registry key does not exist, create it.

In the left pane, right click on the Registration key and select New > String Value.
In the right pane, change the new string's name from New Value #1 to Location.
Double click on the new Location string in the right pane.

In the Value Data box, enter the install location of the application's executable file.

For Dreamweaver MX, the default install location is C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Dreamweaver.exe

Click OK to apply the changes.
6 Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each product that is not recognized by Extension Manager 1.5.
7 Close the Registry Editor (Registry > Exit).
